kiandu-aa-washed
Kiandu AA Washed

Great, classic washed Kenyan coffees are getting harder and harder to find unfortunately. Subtle changes to farming practices, environmental reasons, and changes to varieties mean that the classic Kenyan profile of old is much more rare. This Kiandu AA lot is a great representation of how great and fruity Kenyan Washed coffees can be!

Kiandu is a high-quality washing station in the Tetu area of Nyeri County, on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. It operates under the Mutheka Farmers Cooperative Society (locally also known as Kiandu FCS), which runs several factories in the region and supports thousands of smallholder farmers. The factory receives cherries from around 806 smallholder farmers, 242 of them women — nearly 30% of the total. They grow the classic Kenyan varieties — SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian — at altitudes between 1,700 and 1,810 masl, on rich volcanic soils.

At the factory, cherries are processed using the traditional fully washed method with double fermentation: careful pulping, an overnight dry ferment, thorough washing through grading channels, a 24–48 hour soak, and slow drying on raised African beds with repeated hand-sorting.

Farmers in the region cultivate SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11 and Batian. ‘SL’ varieties are cultivars originally released by Scott Agricultural Laboratories (SAL) in the 1930s and 1940s. They soon became the go-to trees for many growers in Kenya due to their deep root structure, which allows them to maximize scarce water resources and flourish even without irrigation. They are cultivated with a serious eye towards sustainability and Good Agricultural Practices, with minimal environmental impact where possible. Ruiru 11 is a new variety known for its disease resistance and high yields. It starts yielding fruit after just 2 years. These trees are grown around 1600-1700m above sea level

This lot is super tasty - sitting in a very rich red, purple, and orange flavour spectrum, with sometimes some hints of florals! Let this one rest at least 4 weeks before digging in to it, as it'll open up much nicer!
